Buildings and Contents Insurance with Unity Insurance

With summer around the corner and many events and organised trips ahead, it is important to ensure that your property and any equipment that you rely on is protected, both home and away.

At Unity, we understand unique the risks and challenges that charity and community groups face and as a charity ourselves we want to help you to protect your assets so that you can continue to thrive.

What should I consider for Buildings Insurance?

If you own a property, having the right charity insurance for your building is essential. There are many aspects of insurance that you need to consider but Buildings and Contents Insurance will help cover the costs of repairs, rebuilding, or replacing essential items following damage or theft.

For freehold properties you need to insure your property for the full cost of rebuilding, including the price of materials, labour availability and costs, professional fees (such as architects and surveyors), demolition fees and VAT where appropriate, and it is vital to revalue your property regularly to avoid underinsurance. For leasehold properties make sure that your landlord has you fully covered to avoid problems if a break-in or damage occurs. It’s important to also understand if your lease includes any insurance terms for the building externally or internally.

Business interruption is another major risk that many charities overlook. If your building is damaged and unusable, Business Interruption cover can help with the ongoing costs and loss of income while you get back on your feet.

How about Contents & Equipment Insurance?

Content policies generally cover the cost of replacing items like furniture, equipment, and stock if they’re damaged or stolen.

Consider how much your contents and equipment would cost to replace from new and beware not to work on second hand replacement costs. Items such as ovens, microwaves and water boilers might be taken for granted so ensure you think of everything! Also ensure portable equipment used off-site is covered. Taking your group for an overnight stay is great fun but you do need to protect your equipment when you are away from your base. Also think about your high-value items like bikes, canoes, laptops, phones or iPads and list these separately.

Equipment you hire or borrow

Many charities and community groups hire or borrow equipment for events. Check the insurance with any company that you are hiring or borrowing from and make sure that you are covered for any damage caused by your group should this happen. You may need also need further short period equipment insurance cover for equipment you borrow or hire for your event or trip.

You may need to consider covering items you borrow or hire when they are in storage while in your possession, being taken to and from the event, and at event. If not, a claim may not be paid for physical loss or damage to equipment you hire or borrow for the event.

Specialised equipment

Hiring specialised sports or medical equipment may also be a consideration for your charity, especially if you are planning a trip away or a special event. Again, chat with our friendly team to ensure that you have the right cover in place.
