Coronavirus and your Property and Equipment insurance

Coronavirus outbreak and your Scout and Girlguiding Property insurance

updated 17 March 2020; still current at: 2 February 2022

The current outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first reported from Wuhan, China, on 31st December 2019. This outbreak has since been reported widely in the media and by authorities such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019, and it continues to make headlines around the world.

How the novel coronavirus outbreak affects your Scout and Girlguiding Property & Equipment policies

Some Scout Groups and Girlguiding Units who hire out their buildings, may have taken out loss of revenue and loss of rent cover to protect their income if their building cannot be used,

Property insurance policies cover physical loss or damage to insured property resulting from a covered peril listed in the policy. Without physical damage from a covered peril, income loss associated with people choosing not to travel and/or people choosing not to patronize a business (even if travel is restricted by a government authority), is not a valid claim under a property insurance policy.

Our Scout and Girlguiding property insurance policies are no different and require a physical loss or damage to insured property. Likewise, loss of revenue or loss of rent requires this physical damage trigger.

Therefore under our Scout and Girlguiding Property and Equipment policy, you would not be covered for:

  • Loss of rent receivable
  • Loss of Revenue

Resulting from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Loss of rent receivable cover and Loss of Revenue cover are more fully explained in our Scout and Girlguiding policy wordings.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is not included in the perils covered and would not trigger physical loss or damage.

What we have changed effective immediately

Under the ‘Warranties’ section of our Property and Equipment policies, if you are unable to comply with the checking of properties or equipment due to being unable to travel for any reason as a result of Coronavirus (COVID-19), these warranties will not be enforced during this current outbreak as defined by the UK government.

Unlike traditional UK commercial insurance policies, our Scout and Guide property and equipment does not have an unoccupancy time limit (commercial insurance usually requires a building to be occupied within 30 days) and we understand that the current outbreak (as defined above) may prevent access to Scout and Girlguiding properties for some time in excess of the standard 30 day period. To reiterate, your policy terms and conditions will not be affected if you are unable to attend your building for any reason as a result of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
